My hometown of Portland is a large city with a small town feel, but like other major US cities, it is not immune to change. This series captures places of historic and personal importance at moments where the past and the future compete to have meaning. Facets of Portland celebrates aspects of the city, both large and small, while also documenting some of the destruction of the city’s past to make way for the future. I consciously use the natural medium of encaustic (beeswax) as a contrast to the architectural and industrial subjects while giving a sculptural and tangible quality.
